Assignment 5 · External Participation

Due: December 4 by 11:59 PM ET · 4% of course grade

1 Purpose

Primarily, professional development happens outside the classroom. To earn these points, you will participate in and document an external activity during the semester that supports your career preparation, graduate-school preparation, research development, or professional networking.

The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to take advantage of opportunities at Georgia Tech beyond PHYS 4604 that can help you build experience and advance your professional goals.

2 Eligible Activities

Appropriate activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • A Georgia Tech Career Center workshop;
  • An official Georgia Tech Career Fair;
  • An industry job interview;
  • An internship-related professional activity;
  • A research symposium or academic conference;
  • A grant submission or grant acceptance.

Many relevant events will also appear on the Georgia Tech Campus Calendar.

NoteWhen in doubt

If you are unsure whether a particular activity counts, ask the instructor.

3 What to Submit

Submit a PDF to Canvas containing documentation of your participation. Your submission should include:

  1. Your name and the title of the event or activity.
  2. The date on which the activity occurred.
  3. A brief 1–2 paragraph description of the activity and how it relates to your professional development.
  4. Written or photographic documentation showing that you participated.

4 Acceptable Documentation

Documentation may take different forms depending on the activity. Examples include:

  • A registration confirmation, attendance confirmation, or completion email;
  • A photograph or selfie from the event, when appropriate;
  • A screenshot of participation in a virtual event;
  • A program, nametag, badge, or event sign-in confirmation;
  • A copy of a grant submission confirmation or acceptance notice.

The documentation does not need to disclose sensitive information. For example, students documenting a job interview may redact personal details as needed while still showing that a qualifying professional activity occurred.
